History

The Evolution of the Erasmus+ Program

The Erasmus program, which began as a process for student exchange in Europe, has today transformed into a large-scale European Union program encompassing education, youth, and sports.

1981-1987

Program Start

A pilot student exchange program was conducted between 1981 and 1986. The Erasmus program was launched on June 17, 1987, involving 11 countries.

1988-1999

The Enlargement Process in Europe

Exchange programs were initiated with Luxembourg, EFTA countries, Liechtenstein, and Central/Eastern European countries. During the 1994-1999 period, the Erasmus program continued under the Socrates program.

1999

Türkiye's Involvement in the Process

With the start of Türkiye's EU accession process at the Helsinki Summit, Türkiye began to benefit from community programs.

2002

Turkish National Agency Process

The Framework Agreement enabling Türkiye to benefit from EU programs has been ratified; and the Directorate of European Union Education and Youth Programs has been established to assume the role of the National Agency in Türkiye.

2003

Erasmus Program in Türkiye

The European Union Education and Youth Programs Center was established, and the Erasmus program was launched in Türkiye with the selection of pilot universities.

2004-2013

The Initial Changes and the LLP Era in Türkiye

The first exchange with Türkiye took place in 2004. Between 2007 and 2013, the Socrates and Leonardo da Vinci Programmes continued as the Lifelong Learning Programme.

2014-2020

New Erasmus+ Period

The new Erasmus+ Programme was launched in 2014. The period 2014-2020 was the first seven-year program period of the Erasmus+ Programme.

2018

Institutional Structure of the Turkish National Agency

The Turkish National Agency became an affiliated organization of the Presidency for European Union Affairs, which is a subordinate organization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, by Presidential Decree No. 4.

2021-2027

Second Erasmus+ Programme Period

The 2021-2027 period is the second seven-year program period of the Erasmus+ Program.
